Student FAQ

Who does the Center teach?
Anyone 18 years of age or older that is committed to learning.

Who will teach me?
A volunteer tutor will provide you with literacy instruction – for reading and writing, for mathematics, and for basic computer usage. Your tutor can work privately with you, which we refer to as one-on-one instruction. Or, you can become part of a small group for classroom instruction led by a volunteer tutor. You choose which arrangement is the most comfortable for you.

When is the tutoring held?
One-on-one (private) instruction is held whenever the student and the tutor are available. This could be in the morning, afternoon, or in the evening. However, our classroom instruction has set times so please check with the Center for class schedules.

Where is the tutoring done?
Tutoring can be held at our office at 16 Dixon Street in Milford or at an agreed-upon location between you and your tutor for individual instruction.

Is childcare available?
Childcare services are available at the Meadowside School for the children of those students enrolled in the Intermediate Class on Tuesday nights.

How much does it cost?
All tutoring is free of charge.

How do I become a student?
Call us at 203-878-4800 for an interview, and we will walk you through the process and pair you with a tutor as soon as possible. We are open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Literacy is Living. Literacy is the Freedom to Live.

LITERACY is the state of “being literate.” Literacy is defined by a combination of basic skills (not just one skill) that everyone needs in order to function in society. If you are from another country and want to be comfortable in your new cultural location and want to take advantage of all the opportunities here and make it your home, then you will be required to become “literate.” If you live in this country and feel that you have been deprived educationally, then you too may want to brush up on your literacy skills.
